How was DOTS born? Hellen’s Story

Having grown up in England but coming from Tanzania, there’s a number of things that connect Hellen and Maria in terms of their passion for being able to do something that not only delivers a great product and a great output, but also works on the more social aspect.

From a young age, I’ve always been involved in business in some shape, way or form. My family have been quite entrepreneurial and as a young child I was encouraged to think about different solutions.

I studied economics and that was really my first love and I’ve always wanted to work within a development framework.

For me, when Maria approached me in February 2015, and spoke to me about her great concept and idea behind Daughter of the Soil, it was something that made me feel like I wanted to be a part of this journey.

I’ve known Maria for a number of years and it was really exciting to be part of a project where we could have complimentary skill-sets that would really help us to bring this product to market. We’ve worked really well together on a number of different things, including brand awareness, building our social strategy as well as more commercial aspects of the journey.

I was really inspired to work with Maria on this because Connect the DOTS is something that I feel passionately about. It’s all about helping women living in rural Africa really get the tools and the ability to earn a sustainable income.
